Getting Back Into Things
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I think I'm finally well enough to get back into things here.

- I've cleaned up my message center.
- I've started a new community project. [link]
- I've rewritten my bio to better reflect the crazed duct tape addict that I am.
- I've made a poll about the bio.
- And, here I am, writing a new journal entry... about something other than me being sick.

Well, that's not to say that I'm feeling all that much better... a little better, but griping about my health shall have to wait for another journal entry.

Oh, did I mention I've accomplished just a small tad of evil admineyness?

Ah, the joys of Storm-Artists. Well, that's all for today. Next time, perhaps I shall gripe about widescreen monitors on laptops. They may seem neat, but they're actually more trouble than they're worth!

Home Again...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I'm back home with a new medication, this time a muscle relaxant to see if the pain in my neck and shoulders and the muscle spasms I've had are muscle related. So far it seems to have helped my neck a bit but the muscle spasms remain (though less severe). I've only been on it for 16 hours so there's a chance things will get better over the next week. Hopefully that's what's causing most of my problems, since it's an easy fix.

One thing that came out of this is that I have actually found something nice to say about WalMart. I don't have health insurance, so anyplace else I'd have paid $200-$300 for the three prescriptions I've gotten so far. WalMart, with their discounted prescriptions (many being just $4... $4!!!!), I've only had to pay $36 total. Of course, that's probably the only nice thing I have to say about WalMart... but at least it's something, right?

Well, that's all I have for today. Until next time,

Well, I have to head back to the doctor. The "first-try" medication I was prescribed has given me no relief whatsoever and I feel totally miserable.

So... I could be away from Storm for a bit, depending on what the next step will be. I hope it's nothing serious... but the doctor mentioned sending me to a specialist to have my throat scoped. How I'm going to pay for that, I don't know. Oh well... one day at a time.

I'll post an update when I have the opportunity.

Been to the Hospital
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I was in the emergency room yesterday morning. Still no explanation for my symptoms which include slight throat constriction, throat pain, occasional sharp pain around my neck, shoulder blades, ribcage and other random locations and periodic small-scale muscle twitching. I've got some medication to try to clear up some of the problem since it seems like I might at least have a viral infection of some sort (no fever, not strep, not mono, etc.), but I'm still quite miserable. A slightly foggy head and a sinus headache make it hard to look at the CRT monitor... I can literally see the flicker of the refresh if I'm not looking straight at the center of the monitor to boot... which may be half of why I have a foggy head.

So... you may not see me here or on sa.n chat as frequently as usual. Ah well... gotta take it one day at a time.

So... until... whenever...

It seems I've fallen a bit behind when it comes to my message center here. Shame on me!

That said, I'm working to get caught up. Only 45 more artworks to look at.

Other than that... well, I haven't been feeling well lately. I've got a cough that won't go away and my throat feels like it's all torn to pieces... and has for more than a week, despite medication. I hope it's just a result of all the dust in the house from my Grandfather's dragged out and unreasonably messy remodeling of the bathroom. Ah well. Life.

That said, Happy Easter!

That's right, I said Happy Easter! I will not degrade myself by saying Happy Egg-Laying Male Rabbit day or whatever the adherents of the atheistic religion call it this month. Did I just call atheism a religion? Yep, looks like I just did. It fits the definition when it comes down to it.

Oops, I'd better stop now before I get any more politically incorrect today. Man, I need a serious duct tape fix!

Well, until next I ramble on, may the duct tape be with you!

A Thought On The Almighty (Religious Thoughts)

A Thought
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Warning: Religious Thoughts Below, Continue At Your Own Peril!

I grew up and was taught that God is all seeing, all knowing and all powerful. Of course, I've always taken that for granted all my life and I see no reason to think of God as anything but all mighty.

Some who preach in his name seem to think otherwise though. Extreme Intelligent Design vs. Evolution, need I say more?

Something has struck me as decidedly odd about the aforementioned debate. In order to assume Intelligent Design to be correct, you have to make a frightening assumption: That God is not all seeing, all knowing and all powerful enough to have created a universe in which His Design would develop by itself according to His Plan.

So I have to ask: If we are incapable of comprehending what God CAN or DID do and HOW he did it, how can we say what he CAN'T or DIDN'T?

I suppose you might now expect me to give my opinion on what God did or didn't do and try to convince you that I'm right and everyone else is wrong. You'll be disappointed then. I have the wisdom to know that the designs of the Almighty are beyond my reach and I will not presume to dictate unto Him what he did or did not do. If he desires to show us, then it is up to us to keep our eyes, and minds, open to His presentation of such knowledge, if and when He chooses to grant it.

The End.

Brawl !!!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok, so I've got Super Smash Brothers Brawl... the day after US release, no less. Gotta love all those people who seem to have forgotten that the local Toys-R-Us sells video games. Everyone else is out and people are mad, yet Toys-R-Us had full shelf load (10-15 copies) and only one person bothering to look there (me). Tis how I got my Wii too.

Well, I have to say, I'm mildly disappointed, and not because they didn't include Krystal as a character... Zero-Suit Samus made up for that.

In reality, it's not much more than an updated version of SSBM. Several of the modes have changed in form: Adventure Mode is more like a real side-scroller game, the target shooting thing after playing through classic mode actually nets you coins and the manner in which you spend coins for a shot at trophies is different (it's a game in and of itself), among other things. There are new items too, but there are no new modes and nothing that makes use of the different control modes available on the Wii. Indeed, it's fully compatible with gamecube controllers.

Another negative is the continued insistence on making unlockable characters into near mirror images of starting characters. Indeed, not only does Fox have Falco as a mirror character, there's also another unlockable near mirror! What's the point of unlocking characters if there's not much very special about them?

Speaking of characters, not to beat a dead horse or anything, but Solid Snake DOES NOT FIT INTO A GAME FULL OF CARTOONEY CHARACTERS!!! It just looks... dumb.

And speaking more of characters, what is this studious avoidance of adding new female playable characters to the game? All of the new characters are male, again leaving only Samus, Peach and Zelda. Only a few of the new "ally" characters are female additions to the game. Surely, if they were going to add snake, they could have at least gotten one of the Resident Evil females into the game. With Sonic, what about the females in that game? What about one of the female characters from the Fire Emblem series? Or Krystal? What about Krystal?

Well, I guess it's still a pretty good game and an improvement over SSBM, but it really isn't a NEW game and there are plenty of room for improvement... something I would have expected to have been worked on given the sheer amount of time it took them to get the game straight and out into the market.

I personally rate Super Smash Brothers Melee as a 5 out of 5. Super Smash Brothers Brawl only gets 3.75 out of 5, losing .25 on the count of too little new about it (indeed some of the new things are just irritating), .75 on the count on the continued insistence on mirror characters issue and .25 for including a non-traditional-Nintendo-character who looks and feels so out of place it's pathetic.

Will I still play SSBB till my fingers hurt? Sure! But I think at some point Nintendo really dropped the ball.

That's all for now. Until next time,

WoW!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I've recently made my first foray in World of Warcraft. I'm not exactly sure what all the hype is about.

WoW is nice and all... like a bigger, much more open version of my favorite SP RPG, Neverwinter Nights. It has the capability for coop and PvP too. The skills/professions system and the very useful open economy is cool too. And, blessing of blessings, it works with dailup.

At the same time, it's also... somehow unsatisfying. Alright, perhaps I'm just not used to such slow level progression and the relative difficulty of playing solo (my preferred style). The graphics aren't too stellar either. The updates are hell... I had to have someone with broadband get me the initial 700MB job because the downloader wasn't doing squat and even if it did, it would have taken 20 nights worth of effort to get it.

I guess I shouldn't complain though. At least it's an online game I can actually play, unlike 100% of all of the other MMORPGs out these days. I did even manage getting to 14th level with a rogue in only two nights... but with a lot of "dying" and swearing.

Ah well. I'm sure I'll get the point of it one of these days. For now, though, I'll just have to muddle through. Thank goodness for other web obligation to keep me sane and un-addicted too.

Anyhoo... I shall stop rambling now. It's bad. Very bad.

Well, for starters, a belated Happy New Year to you all!

On a more depressing note, my Grandfather went into the hospital on News Years day with wild blood sugar levels and a heart valve flutter. He has type 2 diabetes and, unfortunately, he was a bit too stubborn to change his diet to prevent problems worse than what was, initially, just a slightly elevated blood sugar level. Now, he'll have to be on injected insulin on a permanent basis and with a strict diet to adhere to. I only hope he takes things a bit more seriously now, particularly for the sake of my Grandmother, who requires daily in home care of her own. But... he's never been one to change his ways.

With that, I must go. I shall probably be rather sparse around here in the next week or two, as keeping the phone line tied up for any length of time will be an impossibility. That doesn't mean I won't be here... lurking... stalking miscat reports and pouncing without warning! I am, after all, the

ZAP!!!

Have at thee! I zappeth thee with mine Wii Zapper!

I guess my major gripe with FPS games on the Wii has come to an end. No more holding the Wiimote in an awkward, arm-cramping position to aim and maneuver. I only wish the Wii Zapper were backward compatible with prior FPS games, but I can't really complain. At least I can play MOH: Heroes 2 for long periods now without getting cramped up arms and I get to feel all soldierly with the Zapper's aggressive feeling SMG type configuration.

I've only got one real complaint. The Wii Zapper comes with the target shooting game Link's Crossbow Training. It's a great bit of fun, but it's far too short and it's far to easy to get gold and platinum medals for the 9 "levels". By far too easy, I mean it's often possible to get a high enough score in just the first part of each level (three parts to a level) to get the platinum medal for the whole thing. I think no one would mind paying and extra $5 or $10 for the zapper ($25) if it had a more expansive or challenging game with it.

Indeed, I've noted an interesting mentality when it comes to the current generation of Nintendo products. They seem to prefer lower performance and lower price even in situations where people would gladly pay a little more to get a little more in the performance department. The Wii has only a measly 512mb internal storage, for example. It could have been upped to 1gb or 2gb and I sincerely doubt anyone would have minded an extra $10-$15 on the price of the console. Ah well, perhaps the SuperWii will take the Wii concept and go somewhat closer to full throttle with features such as graphics. I hope...

I never thought I'd get addicted to an old-school RPG but it seems that I'm totally hooked on Breath of Fire II (SNES, Wii Virtual Console). It is just plain awesomness! All the RPG game goodness with none of the overblown graphics, awkward game mechanics, lame storyline or requirements for rapid reflexes or major hand-eye coordination. It's also looking like a very long game (play-time-wise, though I have spent half my time wandering around in circles, gaining lots of XP and gold for all the trouble, so it isn't really trouble), though that just makes it better.

I would definitely recommend this game for anyone interested in RPGs on Wii virtual console, even over all the Zelda games combined. It's pure awesomeness!

Now this is customer service!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's extremely hard to find companies that really care about the experience customers have with their products these days. Fortunately for Wii owners, Nintendo is one of those all to rare businesses.

If you haven't gotten the news, Nintendo is supplying all Wii owners with new, wrap-around grips for all existing WiiMotes simply because they find that it provides a better grip and enhances gameplay experience. That's right... they're sending them to all Wii owners... up to four of them... FREE! No fee, no shipping, no nothing! FREE! Just because they think it makes the Wii better! Wow!

But wait... another surprise! They've actually been responsive to users and proactive in the accessory department too! New system and channel updates was just released that enables USB keyboards in the Wii Menu and online vote channel! And it's not proprietary either! Any USB keyboard works just spiffy!

Talk about a heady experience. I have personally never encountered a company that pays attention to its users like Nintendo is now. Honestly, with the extraordinary level of continued demand for the Wii they really wouldn't have to go nearly this far to keep and attract customers. That they do is a testament to the different outlook that separates them from MS and Sony in the modern console market. It's a very refreshing thing.

Wii?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ah yes... the Nintendo Wii. What fun!

I have one gripe about it though. The control scheme just doesn't work for first person shooters. While it seems neat that the view and aiming is controlled by the WiiMote pointer it's proving to be an exercise in frustration. The range of motion required to keep the pointer on screen is limited to about 15 degrees in the vertical and horizontal. That means that one has to remain almost perfectly still and move the WiiMote very gently in order to maintain control... exactly the opposite of what is needed for an action-packed thrill ride of a game. I can't go more than 20 minutes on Medal of Honor Vanguard or Call of Duty 3 without getting a sore back and arms.

Of course, for sports games, the WiiMote is ideal. I just wish the game designers would at least give an option to use the Classic controller for FPS games... I think they'd find the gaming crowd to be very appreciative.

Apparently, I'm not well read...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Apparently, I'm not well read. Why? For the sole reason that I didn't bother to read The DaVinci Code and a bunch of other pieces of historical fiction which are apparently supposed to be representations of unvarnished and well proven truth. This, predictably, came from several people I knew as acquaintances and thought were reasonably intelligent. Of course, they know the sort of books I read, which only magnifies the slight.

So, what sort of books does that mirrin guy read? I own around 100 books (excluding comic strip compilations and RPG books, which would probably drive me over 150) on subjects ranging from Ancient Egyptian language to US warship design, though mainly focused on American History and Politics (particularly WWII, the Civil War and the Revolutionary War). Almost all are non-fiction, with the notable exceptions of all of Tolkien's work, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Kalevala, Beowulf and Le Morte d' Arthur. That does not, of course, include all the books borrowed from the library on a wide array of subjects that aren't in my primary areas of interest.

To put my reading in perspective, on average, I read 25 pages of previously unread (by me) work a day. Of course, that's an average, since when I do read, I usually run 300-400 pages in a sitting.

Any yet, it seems, all this is in vain. Just because I don't read fictional books written purely pander to the masses' desire for bizarre theories about long past events, I shall never be considered well read.

Salad Cream
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, if for nothing other than to get out of an apparent rut of depressing topics, I've decided to bring up a hotly debated matter which was recently discussed on irc: the qualities and wonders of salad cream.

For those who don't know, salad cream is a distinctly British product. Loosely similar to mayonnaise, salad cream is creamy but has a tangy zip to it and is used most often as a salad dressing. Of course, being an ingorant American, I had no idea what this uniquely British product was like... or did I? Hmm...

Thanks to good luck, I've actually had the oportunity to not only try the British product itself made by Heinz and available in the US here at the Vermont Country Store, but also the American equivalent, T. Marzetti Original Recipe Slaw Dressing. Tis much awesomeness!!!

I've also discovered that American's aren't so ignorant when it comes to the glories of salad cream and similar products as the Brits might have us believe. If you've ever eaten very creamy coleslaw with a white dressing and no visible seasonings in it, chances are you've been introduced to the genre of products in which salad cream is included. I would say though, that the T. Marzetti Slaw Dressing is the closest product you'll ever get to the British original though. It's also a sight less expensive at about $4 per bottle instead of the  $13.90 + shipping for 2 at Vermont Country Store, though I do think the Heinz is better (fortunately, I didn't have to pay for either... freebie coupon on the Slaw Dressing and mooched from a friend for the Heinz original).

In conclusion: If you want to try something a little different for a salad, veggie dip tray or want to make some really awesome coleslaw, go salad cream!!!

They Prey Upon The Elderly
Written by mirrin

Mood: depressed
Listening To: Nothing...

Volume 2, Number 32: September 14, 2007

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
They Prey Upon The Elderly
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

These kinds of predators: they're out there.

They can be either sex and any adult age.

They are determined and know what they're after.

They want what the elderly have. Freedom. Property. Money.

And, they're willing to take it. Indeed, they'll take it right out from under the noses of the elderly's families.

---------------------------------------

If any elderly individual in your family requires the help of an in home nurse/assistant, I would strongly suggest that they be hired from a reliable agency. If they must be hired independently, the situation in the home must be watched with total diligence, regardless of the employee's known references or history... and even more than total diligence if the elder actually has more than a low, fixed retirement income and little in assets. The same goes for anyone performing any regular assistance for an elder, such as acting as power-of-attorney, medical-power-of-attorney or guardian.

One needs only keep track of the news and shows like Dateline and 60 Minutes to hear about "wonderful" in-home assistants who insinuate themselves into a family, usurp the roles of children and grandchildren and gain backdoor control over the elder's financial assets. They are invariably horror stories, with large amounts of money and often family heirlooms vanishing as a result of the employee's actions. Even worse, families can be torn to shreds as elders too often are unaware of the true nature of the situation or are too embarrassed by it to admit that there is anything wrong and actually defend the predatory actions of the employee, sometimes to the point of actually disowning the children who are trying to protect them.

I suppose I'll get the typical response here:

"We keep close track of what goes on... It won't happen to my family! I don't need to read any more of this."

Wipe that thought out of your head!

I don't have to look far to find someone who's family has faced such a crisis. Indeed, I only have to look in the mirror.

I live in my grandparents home. Members of my family are here 7 days a week. That didn't stop it from happening. We are lucky though... we might have put a stop to it before things got really bad. That doesn't mean the battle is over. We still don't know the full extent of what went on, for it wasn't the one who needed care who was the victim. much of what went on apparently didn't happen in the house, or anywhere we might have noticed, for that matter.

I'm not going to go into details. It wouldn't be fair to anyone involved and there is no knowing if this mess is over, or if the real fight has just begun.

All that I want to do now is to beg you to never assume that things like this won't happen to you, no matter how much effort you put into prevention. Humans are imperfect. We are incapable of putting up a truly impenetrable barrier against such predators. We must willing recognize and accept this, for it makes us stronger and more capable of recognizing when something has slipped by us, before that thing progresses to the point of no return.

I'm In Yer Landz... Beating Up Yer Troopz... Arrr!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got Civilization IV Gold. I had Civilization III Complete, but then a freak accident resulted in the play disc getting broken. So I had to make a choice... keep playing old and inferior or go for new and improved. I decided on the new and improved.

All-in-all, Civ IV has been a mixed experience for me. There have been quite a few improvements and interesting features, but they also added at least two absurdly and unnecessarily complex elements into the game that do little more than to confuse and annoy (the unit upgrades tree and the unit promotions tree).

To make matters worse, the game only comes with an abridged manual (printed) and is supposed to come with full pdf manual. The pdf, however, is absent without leave and 2KGames doesn't seem too interested in answering support emails (has been 3 days despite a promised 24 hour response time). Now, lacking a full manual might not have been too much of a problem, but the abridged manual is only for CIV IV basic... there is no out-of-game documentation on the Warlords expansion which comes with CIV IV Gold whatsoever.

Ah well... a mixed bag is what I've come to expect from my PC game buying experience.

Overall, I'd give CIV IV Gold out of 5, losing one on the grounds of unneeded complexity interfering with game flow and lack of living up to tech support promises.

Things are running a bit rough on the home front, so I might be absent from storm for a few days. Hopefully things will get sorted out by Wednesday. So... if you wonder why I seem to be ignoring my message center for a little while, fear not.

[UPDATE] Things are not going as planned... my interaction on storm is likely to be limited to adminy things for a week or so more. Such is life... never fair but always... unique. [/UPDATE]

Why I'm A Bit Peeved With My Fellow Americans Right Now...

Why I'm A Bit Peeved With My Fellow Americans Right Now...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I swear... I'm the only person within at least 50 miles of my current location that understands the difference between a TV news presentation and TV editorial programing.

Let's face it, most of these so-called cable "news" channels are mainly editorial programing. Editorial programs are, of course, programs in which news stories are "analyzed" by a presenter rather than simple presentation of established and verifiable facts (or at least facts as they can be determined at the time of the report) or the presentation of the opinions and analysis of others (so-called experts) who have no association with the production and presentation of the program itself. Such analysis usually involves the presenter inserting their own opinions and ideas into the presentation, often in a very obvious an forceful manner.

The problem with seemingly everyone I associate with in the real world? They think the opinions of the TV editorialists are established and inalienable fact. It's just plain scary.

I have no choice but to wonder why people don't see, can't see or simply aren't willing to see any difference. Are we that lazy that we actually think it's perfectly proper to let someone we don't know who may or may not have private agendas do our thinking on incredibly important issues for us? Perhaps our education system is simply so defective that we aren't ever taught the difference between the presentations of fact and opinion (I sure as heck know I wasn't... I had to learn it on my own). Maybe it's the failure of the networks for not making sure that the distinction is obvious enough (as if it isn't already). Maybe it's a combination of factors, most of which I probably haven't even conceived of, let alone thought about.

I suppose it seems nice to have the option of blaming the problem on someone else. In our modern society we sure don't like to think that any sort of problem could, in any way, be our own fault. I personally think the problem lies in an intellectual laziness promoted by a primary and secondary education system which focuses almost exclusively on rote memorization and regurgitation and completely ignores critical thinking skills. But then, there's only ourselves to blame for permitting things to remain that way.

Whatever the cause, all I know is the next time someone tells me about some supposedly well established fact that's nothing more than an opinion spouted by some editorialist, they're going to get a lecture of epic proportions.

This journal is, obviously, what would be considered editorial.

I can't find the start disc for my favorite game.

CIV III Complete Disc 1 is nowhere to be found.

I have install discs 2 and 3 in the game box with the manual.

But I don't have the one disc I need.

If I don't find it soon...

I'm going to go insane.

And that's how my day is going today.

The Legend of Zelda: Does Ganondorf Every Really Die?

The Legend of Zelda: Does Ganondorf Every Really Die?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I just finished The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess... awesome game! After nearly 40 hours of play, it never got visually boring and the game is very well balanced when it comes to plot, "dungeons" and the in-between-"dungeons" activities. And yet... it all leaves me with a burning question:

When it comes to the Zelda game world... does Ganondorf ever really die? I mean dead for good dead.

The Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker is currently, chronologically speaking, the "final" game, taking place after the eventual fall of Hyrule. But does the defeat of Ganondorf even mean anything in that game? Every time the goddesses seem to turn their backs on him and let him die once and for all... taking the triforce power away from him, he reappears again and again and again...

When will it ever end? How many times does Ganondorf have to be thoroughly killed for him to die? I must know!!!

Bad Thing... Good Thing...

Bad Thing

As you've all noticed, storm is running almost as slow as it was during the last days of our hosting at Servage. Hopefully it's just a technical issue that can be sorted out with reasonable speed.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Good Thing
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I am officially out of Gamecube games to trade in (ie. the only ones left are "absolute keepers". What this means, of course, is that I managed to get a shiny new copy of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (the pre-owned copies were only a few dollars less, essentially a ripoff considering that there's no warranty). I've been drooling over the game, which was the last big title for the 'cube, since it was released. True, it doesn't have some of the goodies of the Wii version, but then I don't have the cash to buy a Wii.

As of the moment, I have yet to start the game... indeed the only thing holding me back is the writing of this weekly journal entry. That said, I'd better wrap this up and get to the game for I have to mow the lawn and do laundry later.

Until the next time I write,

The 4th Of July
Written by mirrin

[color=303030]July 4, 2007[/color]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 4th Of July: A couple of interesting facts.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

An Interesting Fact: Did you know that the Continental Congress voted for the independence of the United States on the 2nd of July, not the 4th? The 4th of July was the day the actual document we know as the Declaration of Independence was approved as the public declaration of the reasons and result of the vote taken on the 2nd.

Another Interesting Fact: Did you know that the national government envisioned at the time of the Declaration of Independence (and enacted afterwards) bears little in resemblance to the government the United States possesses today? During the period of the Confederation (not to be confused with the Civil War era Confederacy), the national government had little actual power and most power was vested in the relatively independent states.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 4th Of July: Thoughts
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I reflect upon the history of the United States and, in particular, it's politics. I find myself wondering how a nation who's initial supporters looked to such high ideals allowed it's current (form of) government to fall into a quagmire of dirty politics from it's very beginning. Even the enacting of the Constitution, a document who's very creation violated a mandate from Congress (the purpose of the constitutional convention was, by law, supposed to be solely for the purpose of modifying the existing Articles of Confederation) and who's ratification was rife with the sort of political mud slinging and hideously partisan politics we have grown all too used to today. A constitution which was, as Alexander Hamiltion was all to ready to declare in his writings in The Federalist and in other correspondence, designed to inhibit democracy, not guarantee it. It does not surprise me that two states, North Carolina and Rhode Island refused to ratify the constitution as it stood. There was no Bill of Rights in the document our "founding fathers" created... no guarantee of the people's rights whatsoever.

It all makes me realize that the slide from democracy and personal freedoms did not begin with the current Presidency, but began in 1788, when the people allowed, through neglect, their future of their nation to be placed in the hands of what soon would become the United State's first pair of political parties.

Why does this trend continue?

Because the People don't have the same courage that those defending their homes and rights had as they fought against British Toops at Lexington and Concord on April 19th, 1774. They don't have the courage to say "We've had enough. The crap stops here."

I done it I done it I done it I done it!!!

Then I done it I done it I done it I done it again!!!

Two games that have been giving me grief... beat! Both in one day!!!

That's right... I finally got through The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker today. Right after that, I decided to put Starfox Adventures back in the ol' cube to see if I was inspired enough to finally get through that as well (they're both on versions of the same game engine with rather similar gameplay). Sure enough... a few hours later SF: Adventures was history too!

Yep, this tiger is a very happy tiger. A very happy tiger with sore hands... after 8 hours of gaming. Ah well, it was worth every bit.

Now... I think I should do some reading to keep my mind from turning into video game jelly.

Hmm... Ick!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hmm...

That about sums up my week. Dull. Boring. Uneventful. Blah. Hmm...

Well, maybe it hasn't been all dull, boring and uneventful, but 99% of it has... excluding sleep, of course. I've been having the strangest dreams... but I digress.

At the moment, however, things are getting a little more interesting and in a not-too-positive way. I'm looking at storm-artist's on my father's computer, with IE6... I've never before seen the true extent of the mangling of web pages resulting from Microsoft's inane refusal to comply with the CSS web standard. I've seen the big stuff... just never a demonstration of what lots of little non-compliance issues can do when all lumped together, particularly with regards to overlapping elements and even half-covered scrollbars. It's absolutely horrid!

I know some things have been fixed in IE7... but... this is just ICK!

Given that MS has not committed to full CSS compliance, I think I'm fully justified in being of the opinion that no website should bother attempting to go out of it's way to provide IE compatibility. If people want to use the inferior product that doesn't display fully standards compliant sites correctly... well, they get what they pay for.

And now... I end my rantishness by making the obvious point to Firefox... the duct tape of modern web browsers!

Well, looks like everything on sa.n is back to normal for now... technical-wise. I can browse, I can take care of my messages in a timely fashion and even try to do adminy things (on the rare occasion someone hasn't stolen my tasks before I've seen them... almost everything interesting happens when I'm not on...).

Yep... I'm a happy camper.

On the more personal side, I've been trying desperately to get farther in both Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and in Starfox Adventures (both of which use the same game engine and gameplay). I'm not doing too good in either place... ah well... I guess I'll just have to wait until the middle of a sleepless night to get farther, since I can seem to do incredible things, game-wise, when I'm so overtired I can barely see the TV.

Well... I'll keep from blabbering any longer. Til next time,

As you have all no doubt noticed by now, storm-artists is suffering serious server problems. I just want to apologize in advance for my lack of speed in responding to gallery related reports. At the current time, it's taking me 10-20 minutes just to recategorize a singe piece due to constant failed pageloads. Hopefully something will be done to correct this situation in the very near future, but until then... it's just going to be a pain in the rear.

It seems sa.n is back to normal... for now. This means I can finally get to the clogged up backlog that is my message center and actually have a look at the 50 or so artworks there and maybe even comment on some.

The Master Race?

The Master Race?
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I just finished reading a very interesting book entitled Auschwitz, by Deborah Dwork and Robert Jan Van Pelt, which is a history not only of the wartime town and its infamous concentration camp but of the history of the town and Germany's ambitions in the region. It is very interesting in both that it shows both the historical motivations for some of the policies which were implemented under the WWII German rule of Poland but also that in that it shows that some individuals usually portrayed as all-powerful during the years of that regime were far from. But I digress...

Something odd struck me about the concept of a master race and that a people can somehow be made more superior by controlling who has children in order to emphasize physical traits, such as a particular shape of nose and color of hair. Humans are nothing if not balanced creatures. Individuals who possess hereditary external physical traits in common are just as likely to possess hidden genetic defects in common. Thus, through by controlling the birth of children who are most likely to possess certain physical traits it will also increase the incidence of genetic defects and genetic diseases. This is something often seen in the animal world where inbreeding is quite common. For example a significant portion of white tigers in zoos have cleft palette due to inbreeding. Certain "pure" breeds of domestic cats and dogs tend possess issues such as heart problems or other genetic disorders. Humans are no different. It should also be noted that the same thing principle applies to genetic mutations which give resistance to disease... one could easily work resistance out of a population in the course of such a selective breeding program. Of course this was not something that scientists particularly understood back then as the science of genetics and the understanding of the mechanics of inherited genetic traits and diseases had yet to develop in any significant way.

Thus, the concept that a "master" race can be created or enhanced through controlled breeding based upon arbitrary external characteristics is a fallacy. The human body knows best how to take care of itself and it is only though the normal processes of life which it can enhance itself... it is not something which can be forced, something which Darwin himself warned against when putting forth his theory of evolution: that natural selection should never be applied to human society. It was a warning that some chose... and still do not choose to heed.

Sigh... one fact that cannot be denied is that hate is hate, no matter who preaches it. Claiming that hate is anything other than evil and using the names of Jesus and God to justify such an act is a darkness truly beyond my comprehension. I can only hope and pray that the almighty truly is an all-forgiving being and that those who have committed such evils can, in the end if nothing else, understand and admit what they have done.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really need to get this out of my system...

A user who was banned not too long ago for knowingly uploading pornographic drawings in deliberate violation of the storm-artists terms of service and acting in an extremely abusive fashion toward administrators and other community members has since proceeded to use pornographic artwork posted on his personal website to intimidate and slander both this site and at least one administrator here by name... namely me. [EDIT] I've since learned the subversive-imaginati has also received similar treatment at the hands of this individual. [/EDIT]

As for me, I'm not so low, shallow and narcissistic a person as to throw names around or post links and try to incite people into doing things contrary to any semblance of rationality and sanity. To do so would be unethical, immoral, inhuman and would require me to be a total jerk completely detached from any thread of reality.

Yes, I'm upset, but then wouldn't any of us be? How would this person feel if the situation was turned around and it was him being the object of insulting pornographic art? I'll bet he'd have a lawsuit going so fast that it would make heads spin.

What am I (and/or sa.n) going to do? I don't really know right now... it's not a question I can answer. Something will have to be done though. We all have rights and we aren't about to let someone trample all over them just to satisfy his ego.
